Research Focus

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

I think that as a person of minority we are always interested in issues of equity and how we can properly forward with more inclusion. But even as a person of minority I always thought and wished that a woman of color could reveal her interests, love, creation, passion to the world without being a social advocate, or having to always fight for the right. This thought reveals that you can possess all the passion, interests, and have great ideas about how to give back to society, but these are met with challenges, that are in a sense a force to incorporate social advocacy, or be a voice for the voiceless who are not in a position to speak for themselves.

This thought can also be transferred upon the work of a researcher. It is difficult to climb the ladder of academia, without knowing about the many existences of challenges faced by the human civilization, historically, and to the present day. Examples to name a few are: colonization, slavery, refugee crisis, wars, and so on. This is the beauty of a varied educational foundation. But as we begin to pursue our area of focus, the area of focus does not mean that we simply don't care about all the other societal challenges or populations that exist. It means that this is where we think we would do well, and also because it is an area of interest.

The interest is the key. If you were not interested, why would you want to pursue the work to learn more about your focus area. These thoughts can also be transferred to any project, endeavour, or interests that one possess. For example: if you are interested in tennis and play well, then that sport becomes your focus. Or if it is swimming, football, baseball and so on, those become your focus. The same can be said for the idea of research. You recognize where your interests are, and also where there is a need, and simply pursue that.

Scholars or individuals in the field have to understand that focus areas are essential. If we all worked on the same interests then what about all the other areas, where there are needs? This is why it is also important to respect the interests of other researchers, because with all the varied interests, we are in a sense working together to propel the diverse populations forward. Assessing gaps, filling needs, and also pursuing our own interests that we are passionate about.
