Dear Mother Nature:

Hello, how are you?
Whatever happened, what did I do?

I planted trees, flowers and plants, taking care of your growth, re - growth. I walked your lands, breathed the air you gave, elements. When I was confused I went to you, deep in your forests, your waters, sands, our earth. I held your trees, whispered my words, breathed through for your  guidance and protection. Whatever happened?

Why did you break our heart, spilling horror, of dire depths, your waters of dire depths. I ask you Mother Nature whatever happened, what did I do? That caused our people to suffer, and lives lost. Dear mother earth I pour to you my heart, to you in this horrific horror. I know you would never hurt me or our people. What was it, who was it, tell me mother nature?

Mother Nature, this is my tear, I bring it to you, will you heal me Mother Nature? Heal my people? Heal our lands? You are our hope, our strength, guide us to seasons, we seek your balance, please do not sway upon us Mother Nature. I pour these words to you. Whatever happened, what did I do? I know you love me, heal our tears, dear wounded heart. I know you are strong, you know I am strong. Dear heart, will you survive the storm, stay strong for me, promise?

Kind Regards,
Shazi

One of my family elders
once told me, if you can't be there for someone in their time of need , then why be there in their time of happiness? This is what relationships, family and friendships are all about. To be there for each other in happiness and in times of need. Not to ask for a gain or a loss, but simply to be there out of sheer pure love.

With these thoughts and seeing the courage of all of the community, emergency forces, and a city coming together was what allowed me to try to step out of this emotional paralysis I am feeling, a deep paralysis. Seeing what this community is experiencing, and how they are working together is truly inspirational.

I am absolutely devastated to see the effects of nature, these forces that have bruised communities. Yet, I remain hopeful through the strength and unity of communities will, including myself will be able to get through this.

This is what the giving of heart is. I live for America, I die for America. I will never surrender the heart, ever. Houston, Texas we are strong and we will re-build. While the storm may not be over, we must remain vigilant, strong, in solidarity and united. I pour out my heart, my heart is with you, my prayers are with you. We'll get through this.

These thoughts are dedicated to Fred Cuellar & family, please be safe. And to all of Houston, Texas. To every single person, my thoughts remain with you. Thank you for all your efforts, thank you for supporting our city, to all that you are doing to protect lives. God Bless You. God Bless America.

It is hard to imagine what people are going through, the intensity of having to leave everything that they have worked all their lives to build. Yet, watching, the stories of survival, the courage of everyone, coming together keep everyone safe, save lives as the priority is immeasurable. It is with a heavy heart I share some images of a beautiful city, Houston. It is hard to imagine that the very streets that were walked with my feet, are now in high flooded waters. These photos are also shared as a hope. We'll recover & re-build. I am praying for the night, and hope that we can make it through peacefully. God Bless You and God Bless America.

     Why It Hurts
Of course seeing the bravery and courage of all the communities and services working together is truly inspirational. But it hurts to see this destruction because of the knowing fact of how powerful human beings, who have access to technology are able to manipulate weather, and even intentionally create these "natural" disasters. It pays to know. Education must count for something? However, we can be bitter, we can blame, but at the end of the day, whoever has the controls did not come to the rescue. It was the people, it was communities helping each other. God Bless You. God Bless America.

     We will heal.
Looking at all of the images, the hope, the struggles. the stories and all the water, was really overwhelming today. I haven't been able to sleep, eat or even think much more except the suffering that people are faced with. I too felt as though I was drowning. I won't drown, I will keep swimming, we will all keep swimming. This too shall pass, the after affects will take time, strength to heal. It doesn't matter what was lost, it can all be replaced. Human life is precious, this can never be replaced. We will heal. I take a moment to thank everyone for their generous donations, collections, and support. Truly a community coming together. We must also make sure that the aid is given to the people, who need this. The people need help, they also need healing. God Bless You. God Bless America.

Shazi For Senate? ;)

One Nation Under God.

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take a moment to think and reflect.

I graduated from business and landed my first job at an American Fortune 500 corporation. From being a full - time stay at home mother, to a full - time student, and then towards a corporate culture. The dichotomous transitions could not have been more visible. Thinking back I don't think that I was ready for such a transition. However, as I adjusted to my surroundings, I wondered why there was so much dis-organization. So I began to organize, paperwork, files, everything I could organize, I began doing so. This is probably where all my home organizing skill came in handy. Of course on a resume you would write organization skills, but would you say that these are derived from caring for a home?

In the same sense I began to relate this concept of organizing to that of all the controversies that are surrounding the health care bills, and also the shuffling of staff within the White House. Sometimes like the new young business graduate who brought in fresh or naive perspectives, I wish I could do some cleaning and organizing in the White House or Senate, but this time with the issues and topics that are being discussed.

     Staff
With regards to the staff changes, I can say that when anyone desires to serve and become a member of office for the United States of America, then of course there must be loyalty, trust and also a willingness to stand behind a President. If any member cannot adhere to these core values of trust, honesty, and loyalty to stand with a nation, then I think that their presence is not needed. Of course this is not to say that there won't be dialogues and discussions about topics or issues, differing values or opinions, but ultimately the call to office is to serve a nation. Many people put their lives at risk to serve our nation. And it is only fitting that staff members respect their presence as a privileged honor, a call to duty.

     Senate
With respect to the senate and bills that are passed, here the presence differs to that of being hired as a staff member at the White House. Of course the core values of trust, loyalty, and honesty remain, but the Senate is a place for open dialogue, debate, discussion, a democratic space - A Democracy. Members are discussing topics and issues in this space where there will be open agreements and dis - agreements. The setting, job role, responsibilities allow for these exchanges. Even in a state of disagreement, the members are still serving the United States of America. They are pushing for or against something that is for the good of a nation.

     Health Care
So now comes the idea of Obama Care vs. Trump Care. Obama Care is formally known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Trump Care is formally known as The American Health Care Act. To tell you the truth there are advantages to both. To highlight one core difference, I will share that Obama Care does indeed take the needs of the poor and sick over Trump Care. Trump care focuses to provide tax - breaks for the wealthy. Whilst I am not either for or against Trump or Obama care, I do think that there needs to be revisions for health care in the United States of America. The tensions are both from Democrats and Republicans, because they can't seem to make a final decision.

To delve deeper into the issue, I am thinking that large companies or corporations will prefer to overhaul Obama Care because it costs them to provide for health care coverages. But then we also have the tensions of who will be responsible for those who cannot afford care as time goes by. I said earlier that I am neither for or against, because I actually think that a persons access to health care is a human right. Whilst there are states who provide different or amended versions of health care varying from state to state, I think that there needs to be some sort of universal care that seeks to level - the - playing field.

I do acknowledge that America has a unique culture and prefers minimal Government interventions, I also think that there has to be some sort of responsibility upon the shoulder of the nation - state. Health care for all spectrums of society regardless of earnings, income, or job. Obama Care has placed a greater burden upon companies and corporations, who are also tax - payers. Whilst Trump Care may prove a risk for certain income bracket levels.

With these thoughts in mind, we have to think that if Trump Care is passed how will the needs of populations in need be met? If Obama Care remains how can the pressure be eased for corporations, and companies who are paying for health care and coverages? Maybe we could pass Trump care with amendments to the proposed changes? I think that these are essential questions that need to be asked.

America is birthed from the creative, innovative, entrepreneurial spirit, with a strong sense of work ethic. America has grown - flourishing and prospering. We must ensure that all facets of life are given the opportunity to flourish and prosper with good health. It is an absolute that the flourishing of all groups will eventually impact the flourishing of a nation. Individuals should be inspired to grow in any field they choose, with opportunity, and a reduced sense of burden.

   Concluding Thought
The issue of health care must seek be resolved. Lets get organized and deal with matters, so that no one or no bill gets left behind.

Maybe it is time to bring in the Vice - President, President of the Senate?

You Decide: Horror or Hope?

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

The truth is that I was thinking about the Presidential speech that was delivered with regards to the US - Afghanistan strategy. I wanted to take this opportunity to commend the President for his re - marks. I only see it fitting for a continued presence in Afghanistan. America has stood by Afghanistan through the tough times. It would be horrifying if Afghanistan turned against America.

This is what relationships are all about. When we think upon the level of nation to nation, if a country decides to help or assist another country, there must be mutual benefit and exchanges. Not just a relationship that seeks to exploit. Whilst this may have happened historically, it doesn't mean that it should continue to happen. We tend to think of Western countries going into the developing or emerging countries for their own gain. But we can also see the opposite happening where emerging economies might decide to take advantage of the the nation that is assisting them. This point is of particular interest and is linked to the Presidential speech. It is only fitting - if emerging economies want to gain growth at the Global level in line with a vision of prosperity, peace, that is free from tension, and wars, these nations also have a role to play: to de-escalate violence and the terrorist organizations that are growing and breeding in nations.

To tell you the truth, my first reaction when I heard the country Pakistan associated with extreme terrorism actually broke my heart. It was heart breaking to hear this. It is not that I was not aware of this. It actually hurts to know that a nation that is of my ethnic roots / background would also be a associated with terrorist breeding grounds. Reality does hurt. But this is not to say that I did not find hope in the Presidential speech. I thought about it as more of sending a message to Pakistan. A message of harsh truth, and also that of an opportunity. A chance to root out or engage with effective dialogues with such groups. Pakistan is actually a flourishing, thriving economy, with beautiful lands. Of course the disparities between the rich and the poor are highly visible. Wealth gaps been ignored for far too lang.

As I mentioned President Trump's words should be viewed as a warning wrapped in an opportunity. The corrupt leaders at the top have done a huge dis-service to the nation of Pakistan. The terror breeding has silently been taking place without any sort of accountability, or interventions from leaders. So it is truly up to Pakistan to decide if they desire to achieve prosperity for a safe, positive future, alongside other nations. A chance. A message. A prospering Pakistan is in the best interests of Pakistan itself and also neighbouring countries. Maybe it is also time for India and Pakistan to learn to love each other once more as well?

Reflection

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

August 21st, 2017. Why is this date significant? It is a date that is now recorded in history. A date of totality, the Great American Total Eclipse. Whilst my bodily form was not present upon American land on this day, can that stop the spirit? I was truly blessed to witness the live coverage of Path of Totality. I could feel the joy, excitements, and sense of wonder of the crowds of people that had gathered to witness history. Me as well, I'm not sure if anyone heard me clapping and cheering, but I sure did! :) It was truly beautiful to stop for a while, forget about the hurts, destruction and violences that are taking place around the world, and find happy news. Happy news travelling around the world, and happy faces in America. I was able to witness the path of Totality all across the United States of America.

So I count myself lucky. I am not saying that there is any substitute to be fully present, body and spirit. However, sometimes we have to be happy with what we are blessed with, and what we can do with what we have. This is the path of gratefulness. I am grateful for all the live coverage and happy to witness these historic moments. It was truly  magical to see day turn into night, and night turn into day. This is a moment that requires deep reflection. A moment that truly does. The Earth, The Sun, The Moon together as one. Divine Oneness.

Below is a slide show of all of the screen shots from my phone and Mac Book that I took to document this event. I remain in a state of deep reflection.

A Finer Harmony

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

The truth is that I was taking the time to think about why I decided to take a course about the environment, and education for sustainability (EFS). As I think back to my first class, I remember that I was interested in this topic particularly because I wanted to explore the idea of the natural environment, and how this connects to creativity and spirituality. I was also interested to learn because of my sincere belief that even though the United States has withdrawn from the Paris agreement, I was committed to the United States stance that this nation was still interested to preserve, conserve, and find other ways to commit to climate and sustainability

I think that is is safe to say that I feel that I have been able to learn alot, not only through discussions, but also through my own research. Especially when I found that there truly was a connection to human beings and Earth. Our Earth, our home. The Earth supports us. Did we ever take the time to consider this? If you think about it, can human beings even live without the support of the Earth? An idea so simple, yet overlooked everyday. Earth is crucial to our human survival. The challenges of taking care of our Earth are growing everyday because our human existence, and our consumptions are beginning to (or already have) outweigh the Earth capacity to support us.

We must never loose hope, even though we are met with challenges, struggles and even times where we feel that there is no hope, we must never loose hope, because if we do at this present time, then how will we ever begin to think about the future generations, and what they will have to face? So we can see that our present moments are a prescription for the future outcomes, either we choose hope, or loose hope.

It is possible to choose hope because human beings have this capacity called creativity. However, creativity within the field of education for sustainable development (EFS) is somewhat overlooked. We teach and learn about the environment, effects, and causations. But we forget about the value of an interdisciplinary approach. We cannot think about the environment, without thinking about social, and economical challenges. If we are choosing pro - environmental above all other factors, then we have truly done a dis - service. Social and economical challenges cannot be wished away.

We can also think about the arts and the role these have played historically. We can discover our historical positioning with our natural environment, how humans have adapted, grown and developed. Literacy, film, and reading can also help to raise our conscious awareness about the challenges that we face, not only with regards to the economy, but also societies as well. Sometimes the choices that we make about the economy and environment such as Nuclear power investments can bring short - term gains, energy is being produced, with low green house emissions, but there are still risks. These can be viewed through the long - term lens, associated with nuclear power disposal, radiation, and health risks.

This is why creativity, creative thinking skills are so important for this field. We have to find creative solutions, new avenues, frontiers to help support Earth. We owe this to the Earth, because it has and still supports us. For the purposes of the field of education we must find ways of embedding environmental thought within subject areas. Not to enforce the issue, but rather to inspire students to develop a love and care for the Earth.

For the purposes of the University, post - secondary, or any type of higher education institution, there must be an emphasis to use spaces of discussion to critically engage with topics and challenge the unknown. Yes we have to have a deep appreciation for historical perspectives and appreciate the inter - generational, generational relationships, but we must also possess the ability to challenge thoughts, challenge what is. This is particularly relevant not only in the field of Environmental Education, but any field or discipline. Ultimately the topic of the environment, the Earth, its care, is created through natural disasters, but also socially constructed. This makes the discussion of the environment controversial, as well as political.

The decisions with regards to the environment, growth, economy, will impact some communities more than others, this could be either positive and negative. So here we see that not only is environmental education, education for sustainable development an interdisciplinary topic, it is also one that links leaders, communities, the education system, from the space of the university, to the setting of the kindergarten, where the child learns to plant a seed for the very first time. Also not forgetting the role of parents.

Charlottesville: The After-Math

Related Thoughts:
Charlottesville: A Grieving Heart.
Our Nation, Our Dignity.

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

I'm not sure what to say, or maybe I am. It's probably more of a matter of grounding my thoughts. The recent events in Charlottesville surrounding how matters were handled is not only devastating, but also because lives were lost. This continued violence, rallies etc, are not only severing a nation, but also a cause for emotional and psychological trauma. Can we ignore the histories of the past? Can we ignore slavery, can we ignore atrocities that were committed? I don't think we can ignore them, but we have to move from a point of dwelling upon the past within these contexts.

This thought can be related to that of past personal experiences. If there are unpleasant, or experiences that were forced beyond control, for example: rape, sexual harassment, trauma, violent abuse and so one. Does anyone want to remember these atrocities everyday? A person can acknowledge that these experiences did happen by working through the emotions, but individuals must also find ways of moving forward. Moving forward to a place where healthy emotions, a healthy life can begin, and also be able to deal with the harsh histories in a way that is not destructive to the self.

We could say that we are at a turning point in society, or even in America. Is there a place for poisonous racism? Whilst I did mention in my previous thoughts that everyone has the right, or freedom to express their own opinions / ideas, because this is called Freedom of Speech. However, if this speech violates the rights of others then can we really say that this is freedom of speech? In actual fact rights have been violated.

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that: "Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression, this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideals of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, I the form of Art, or through any media of his choice." However in the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, Article 19 is later amended to state that: These rights carry "special duties and responsibilities" and may "therefore be subject to certain restrictions ... and whenever necessary must respect the rights of others."

Here we can see that there is freedom of expression, but these rights are also restricted. We live in a world where we exist with others, this interdependency has to be considered especially when we think about how freedom of speech is manoeuvred in public spaces.

We can also think about freedom of speech in institutions, especially where there are critical discussions. These spaces must be open enough for the allowance of diverse perspectives, whilst they should not violate, or impinge upon personal rights.
These spaces are crucial for the purposes of creating new knowledge, futuristic thinking, and policy making. Ultimately knowledge creation is diffused into communities for the public good.

So we can see how freedom of speech can be utilized and restricted in various contexts and settings. For the purposes of bringing the discussion back to the current events taking place in Charlottesville, we can think about the after math, which involves taking down of the Confederate monuments. What are these monuments? And why are they being taken down? Most of these were erected 35 - 50 years after the war. Records show that they were mean't to legitimize and dignify the White Supremacist regime that had taken hold of Virginia. So here we have direct evidence of what took place  historically. Maybe what is happening in Charlottesville is actually a wake - up call.

Should the monuments be destroyed, or should they be kept. This is a current question because we stand to witness the current destruction of these. Could they be used as teachable moments, to understand history? Or maybe it is time to actually confront and deal with the racist past? These thoughts can also be transferred to any event or harsh history that took place. Another example could be that of the India and Pakistan partition, should this be a time of celebration, or not? Many do celebrate, many don't because it was also at this time families, friends, and loved ones were torn apart because of the divisions of land.

Whatever the answer to the Monument question, we cannot ignore what took place in Charlottesville, the deaths and now the aftermath. This actually should be a call to action. The rights of others have been violated. Instead of accepting accountability, or responsibility, we once again see how core issues become blurred, because conversations are becoming more about: who said this, or he / she said it better, or this response was better than that response and so on. The real issues have been covered and ignored because of all of the above.

Thoughts to consider:
It is time to confront racist ideologies?
Maybe it is time to re - name or re - invent?
We must think critically about what these monuments signify. Yes that are a part of history, but, we cannot ignore the contexts that surround them? The discussion should really be brought back to the organizers of the rallies, because they are the ones creating the racial tension at this present moment, not the monument.

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

The truth is that I have been taking some time to think through the many ideas and thoughts with regards to the environment, sustainability, and the kind of future that we must envision for future generations to enjoy. It is enough to say that we human beings are already consuming more than we need to, not only the for resources that we need for survival, but also in terms of taking from the Earth, and not replacing what we took. Whilst I do want to acknowledge individuals, groups, or even companies who do in fact care about the resources that they take, and also do replace, I do want to raise into our awareness the idea that more efforts are needed to be put in place for this kind of replenishing.

We could argue that the Earth has the ability to replenish itself, because everything exists through an ecological system. This may have been the case, but through the interventions of human kind, I don't think that this is the case anymore. Human intelligence has grown far beyond that of the Earth's own capacities. We are able to see, do, or even control our environments through technological advances. There is a danger point to this thought. Imagine: groups / individuals possess the technological capacity for destruction, can you imagine this?

This is why we have to be more aware about how we treat the Earth, our World. Even if there are individuals / groups who possess this type of intelligence, they too have to exercise a certain amount of control, because the last thing that we want to do is to destroy the Earth. For Human existence there must be both Earth and Human Beings. There is an interdependent relationship, that needs to be maintained for the purposes of our survival.

There are technological advances that can both protect and harm the Earth. There is also the idea of socially constructed problems that happen because of systemic barriers, or even a conscious violence that takes place to keep certain communities marginalized. We can think in terms of developing countries, but we can also think closer to home, such as Flint, Michigan, where the water crisis began in 2014. We can wonder why in an advanced country - do we have problems where people cannot gain access to clean water? Access to clean water is a human right.

Think about it: Water for drinking, cooking, personal cleansing, laundry, etc ... We can think of the many uses of water. The example of Flint and the ideas with regards to technology reveal that the protection of the environment is not just about making sure that the recycling is done, no, it boils down to a social and moral imperative.

To understand what it means to think about sustainability as a moral imperative, we can ask simple questions such as: 1) Should there be a river built near a residential area? 2) Why do you think the Flint water crisis is still not resolved? 3) Do you think that trees should be logged, without being replaced?

The above questions are in place as examples, you could think of any questions that are related to enviromental  issues. The chances of the answers simply being a yes / no answer are very low. Also questions like these will go far beyond thinking about sustainability, because our own personal, moral, and ethical values will be called into question.

This is why we have to think about the environment, sustainability, or sustainable development  through a holistic level. One decision will impact something else. Taking care of our Earth is not an isolated choice. There is much more to think about. We have to move beyond the idea of Earth replenishing itself (This thought is derived from the Principle of Limits), because the interventions of human kind have taken over, or out - weigh the Earth's capacities. While there are technological advances and sociological constructions, we owe it to the present and future generations to: Care, critically, and creatively think through solutions, and ideas of how we can move forward to live in a world, live in an Earth that is in finer harmony with nature, and the natural Earth.

Sometimes along this path of life we loose our sense of purpose, value, or even away from our goals. For this we must return and remember that the path that we are walking. It is only human that we sometimes do feel lost or confused.
