Folds of Honor

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

I have written a lot about the flag debate, sports players choose to stand for the flag or not. But recent events have once again alerted me to write. Once again I reiterate it is not the flag that should be the debate. It is the issues, or topics that the sports players are concerned about that are up for debate. From this thought we have to understand that the avenue for protest, or debate is in question here. Could we say that kneeling during a national anthem is just an easy way out, an easy act of protest, to cause a scene or a spectacle? If you think about the flag or those that defend, fight, and even sacrifice for America, they give their all. They give their life to defend, protect, serve, and fight for the Nation of America. And when called to defend allies, service members act upon the call of duty as well.

Whilst I do agree that nations should do their best to protect democracy, or free speech, I also argue that kneeling when the national anthem is playing is not the solution. In fact I would say that the athletes who are protesting are spoilt, overpaid, who do not appreciate representing their country. This is where we should take the opportunity to look at countries who are less developed, or not as wealthy. Athletes would give anything to represent their country and their flag.

Whilst kneeling for the flag could also be viewed as disrespectful, the anthem playing should be a point where everyone despite their political difference takes a moment to remember the souls who have given their everything for the protection of a nation. The topics, issues, that are debatable should be debated, but debated at a constructive level. And I question here, how would you respond to anyone who has lost a family member through service?

When all is said and done, we have to remember that the athletes who are protesting do have power through their platforms, and the wealth that they possess. To say the word constructive is to say: use your platforms and power where they can make a constructive difference. Use these avenues where politicians, or those who do possess the power to enact change will willingly sit down, listen, reflect, act, intact, and implement what is up for debate. Use the benefits of an athletic platform to achieve understandings, and not simply to be a spectacle,as  a show piece on the field.
