Refection: Global Globes

As I close my eyes and drift away to a land where there is love, health, peace, and blessings. I wanted to take the time to think and reflect.

The truth is that I was taking the time to reflect upon my previous thoughts. Particularly with regards to the Golden Globes speeches, and the raising of awareness of the various harassment that takes place in Hollywood. As mentioned earlier, harassment, the existence of power relations exists in all fields, not just in the field of work, this could also be in homes, families, and the various relationships that human beings forge. I thought about the setting for the awards where the rich, famous, wealthy, gather to claim their awards, and make their speeches. Women who regard themselves as feminists or not, spoke out about the struggles that women go through. The voices of women that we heard are also a construction of power. Powerful women voicing and raising awareness. Could we say that all women will be able to speak out about what has affected them or not? We talk about the need to mend this or that, but we have to also remember that power also decides whose voice will be heard, and that also includes the voices of women.

Even women who are of a minority, acclaimed, and famous. They too are a part of the power because they possess power through the accrual of the wealth that they possess. Whilst we can be grateful to them for raising awareness about topics and discussions that took place, but doing so should never mean that one is also in a position of expectation, from the voices that have been discussed on the speaker behalf. Claiming prestige, power and the attainment that one has achieved is truly something to be happy about and celebrated, but with this also arrives an implicit responsibility of giving back, serving and doing something with the power that one has acquired, in other words serving for the good of others, should one choose to do so.
